Climate change and the global challenge
The world faces an unprecedented challenge. The average temperature on Earth has risen by more than one degree over the past hundred years, and the consequences are becoming increasingly visible. Extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels and loss of biodiversity threaten our living environment. Scientists agree that greenhouse gas emissions must be drastically reduced to prevent the worst consequences of climate change.
The Netherlands, as a low-lying delta country, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The protection of our coastline, water management and agricultural sector require a decisive approach. The Paris Climate Agreement provides the international framework, but real development must take place at national and local level.
- Global temperature has risen by more than 1°C since the pre-industrial era
- The Netherlands is committed to climate adaptation and water management
- The Climate Agreement sets a 55% CO₂ reduction target for 2030
- Protection of biodiversity is essential for a healthy ecosystem
